PS Queen Victoria Shipwreck

Queen Victoria Paddle Steamer sinks just off the Baily Lighthouse.

The Bailey light house was built in about 1667 by Sir Robert Reading who was in charge of building several privately owned Lighthouses in Ireland by order of King Charles II of England.

The PS Queen Victoria was a paddle streamer boat that travelled from Liverpool on the 14th of February 1853 with the intentions to dock Dublin Port. There were approximately 100 people on board. Due to severe fog and snow ahead  when approaching the Coast at Howth Head the ship hit the rocks and sank.

Only 17 people escaped on a lifeboat and an estimated 83 people died.

All the blame was put on the Captain and Crew because the failure to install a fog alarm. A bell was finally installed 2 months later even though they were warned 7 years prior to the wreck.

The wreck was never removed despite attempts and still remains at the bottom of the Bailey Lighthouse twenty metres below sea level even to this day!
